If you don't set up things right(and that is where the issue lies) you get garbage. Here are some general steps: 1. Import or create your own layout. You must map the copper in the respective layers, use the "LAYERS" palette to know what is available. Otherwise, add more layers 2. Create the substrate. This is the PCB stack up! Add all the layers, Er, and layer thicknesses 3. Create layout layers - this is where you will tell the tool which layer your want the conductors to be in. Top, bottom etc... Add all the parameters such as conductivity etc... 4. Add ports. This is a bit tricky. If you are doing single port or differential sims, you need to line up the ports along the correct X coordinates or y coordinates. Failure to position them in the write coordinates, will give you errors. You have to line them up for differential sims, and for single port too. Use at least one port as ground reference for the sim. 5.Setup the MESH. I normally add the highest frequency I think will be running on the substrate. I do a 1GHz 6. Setup the S-parameter use Adaptive and enter a range for the S-parameters. 7. Simulate I know this is very generic and you will have your share of frustration getting it going. Later you need to validate the simulation with measurement. This is where you realize (as I did) your simulation doesn't agree with the measurement. It is not the tool generating the wrong answer, it is an issue with setting up the stackup, mesh, ports, etc... All these have to be right in order to get close to measured values. I am currently struggling since CST EM tool predicts accurately an antenna model, and Momentum does not... I am irritated no one in these forums help out! Just lurkers and not help!
