使用MPLab X IDE时遇到问题

    Firstly, Im an EE student and this is all very new to me.

I just started my microcomputer class. The school uses an old version of MPLab IDE, 8.9xx. Before knowing this I installed MPLab X on my laptop. He said I could use it, but he wouldn't be able to help me with the software itself.

Anyways, i watched a few tutorials and tried to give it a shot. When I went to start a new project, I made it to the list of compilers, which there were none to select. We are programming, in assembly, a PIC16F883.

What's up? What am I missing here?

I actually uninstalled it and installed the older version so I could get started doing my work. I'd eventually would like to try it again as it is the newest version.

Also, i am eventually going to take a class in C++. What are the limitations of using the free version of the XC8 compiler? I don't plan on making money programming these things anytime soon, but I'd like to keep programming them to learn and retain what I've learned. I just dont see that happening if I have to pay some crazy subscription fee.
