I'm pretty good with the VHDL.
I know that scripts are very useful, so I'll have a look into that.
I'm pretty good with matlab, but I have to look into this tool, from an FPGA designer point of view.  Thanks.
 
I downloaded the Xilinx ISE 11 Webpack, and I have a Vertex-5 Evaluation board from Avnet, so I'm getting some good experience there.
I'm also going though all the Xilinx video tutorials.
I also found an online course, FMAC, from a school in New Mexico, I believe, with series of tutorials from basics to not so basic tutorials.
 
I'll have a look at ModelSim XE Starter.  I have some experience with ModelSim, but I could use a refresher.
 
Yes, these forums are an excellent source for when you get stuck, or for learning more.

what did she mean with industry standards?
There are a lot of things different, depending on your goal.
 
The standard designer has to know at least a HDL (VHDL or verilog) and some Tcl knowledge would be useful for tool scripting.
Also a simulator is a must have.
 
DSP-Designers would add Matlab and associated interface tools.
 
Embeded Designers have to add a SDK (Software develoment kit) for the target CPU.
 
So if you want to start and decide to make your first step with XILINX, get yourself the ISE Webpack and Modelsim XE Starter (if you are working on Windows OS).
With that you can get experience with HDLs, simulation and synthesis.
Take some time for learning and report back when questions arise.
Or just look at the forums what other peoples ask. You can learn a lot from just browsing the forums. here and on comp.arch.fpga, comp.lang.vhdl and comp.lang.verilog
