My understanding (which Intel Customer Support will need to verify) is that the (Type E) M.2 slot is only supported for the installation of specific WiFi modules; it is not supported as a general-purpose (Type E) PCIe slot. Based on your post let us inform you that Mr. N. Scott Pearson is right; the M.2 2230 (type E) is not for storage, it is reserved for peripheral interfaces such as wireless cards.
For more information, you can refer to the page 13 of the product specification sheet.

Hello Scott and Diego, thank you for your help.
 
Now I understand that the bios doesn't show the second M.2 slot as it is not important for the bios if there is a WiFi module present.
 
Scott says "it is not supported as a general-purpose (Type E) PCIe slot." but the the technical reference it shows that the 2230 slot supports PCIe and USB (Table 17 on page 47/48) like a standard M.2 E-key 2230 interface. (Also chapter 2.2.4.2  on page 49 shows this).
What information tells that this is not a fully supported port? What functions or interfaces are not supported? Or are these shared peripherals like USB or PCIe?

Actually, it's important to the BIOS as it has parameters specific to the module's presence (for example, consider Bluetooth keyboard support while pre-OS). I think it becomes an issue of whether it was worth their while to show any information regarding the socket itself.
 
Regarding any "supported" statement, you need to understand that what this means is that Intel only validates the operation of the socket with the WLAN card. Using any other card is not supported and, as a result, there is no guarantee that, if a problem is uncovered, this problem will be addressed and in a timely fashion. Again, I do not work for Intel and I do not speak for Intel. Diego will need to fill you in on the official position...

Again thank you for your fast response: "for example, consider Bluetooth keyboard support while pre-OS", I see, I didn't think about that.
In the meanwhile I have been working on getting the device working when the OS is booted, it does recognize the device now and I am able to use it.
 
However, my question about whether there are shared interfaces remain. Maybe Diego has answer to that question. (I don't want my own device to stop working when I plug in some extra USB device).

In this case, what Scott P. stated is correct.
For the M.2 2230 module connector (Key Type-E), Intel only supports Wireless cards/modules as it is specified on the page 49 of the Technical Product Specification Sheet, the board supports M.2 2230 (Key Type-E)(WLAN).
You can try testing other types of M.2 cards, but Intel cannot guarantee they will work, not support the configuration.

Hello Diego,
 
I still don't understand why the connector would only support wifi cards, there is no way for the bios to know what is connected until it generates a REFCLK and has communication with the device.
 
I will explain my case a bit more; I am developing an FPGA soundcard which should communicate to the NUC over an PCIe connection, the M.2 connector has PCIe in it and the documentation does not clearly shows why only wifi cards would be supported.
In the meanwhile I've got the communication going between the NUC and my FPGA platform, the application used to work with a standard mPCIe interface instead of a M.2 E-keyed interface. We found out that there are some differences between the PCIe interfaces described by the standards of the pcisig organisation.
There are public documents available from pcisig which are called: "PCI-SIG ENGINEERING CHANGE NOTICE". One of these documents describes some of the differences between mPCIe and M.2 B-keyed. (The B-keyed card also has PCIe present). Some signals has to be pulled low for the REFCLK to become available (CLKREQ#) for instance. On mPCIe this was not required and so we didn't do this. We applied the proper signals to the interface and now it works as a sound card.
 
So my question remains, why would the PCIe interface in the M.2 E-keyed slot not be a standard PCIe interface except for the differences described by the pcisig standards?
I still want to know this because I don't want a bios or kernel update to break my application in the future.
