But when I try to use the small M.2 slot the device is not recognized. Several sources on the intel page: Intel® NUC Board NUC7i3DNBE 122501 shows that there are 2 M.2 slots available, a 2280 M-keyed slot and a 2230 E-keyed slot. The product specification sheet: https://www.intel.com/content/da ... DN_TechProdSpec.pdf also show that the 'second' M.2 slot (the 2230 E-keyed) is available. There are remarks on several places that there will be a wifi card in this slot on kit's that use this board and that way this slot is not available for use. (I suppose that this means it is not available because it is already populated). When I look in the bios under Advanced > Devices > PCI, I can see only 1 M.2 slot. I have a checkbox to disable this slot and it shows some information about the SSD that is present in this slot. It does not show the second M.2 slot. When I take out the SSD from the 2280 slot the bios shows me that the M.2 slot is "Not Populated" and the device ID is " I have searched for this and tried some things in the bios like switching on UEFI boot and legacy boot, enabling and disabling the WLAN and Bluetooth options in Onboard devices. I updated my bios to the latest version. Why does the bios only show 1 M.2 slot while there are two on the board? Does it check if the device in the 2230 slot is the what otherwise would be the supplied wifi card? Any tips on enabling the second M.2 slot? Thank you in advance! Greetings, Justin |

Now I understand that the bios doesn't show the second M.2 slot as it is not important for the bios if there is a WiFi module present. Scott says "it is not supported as a general-purpose (Type E) PCIe slot." but the the technical reference it shows that the 2230 slot supports PCIe and USB (Table 17 on page 47/48) like a standard M.2 E-key 2230 interface. (Also chapter 2.2.4.2 on page 49 shows this). What information tells that this is not a fully supported port? What functions or interfaces are not supported? I will explain my case a bit more; I am developing an FPGA soundcard which should communicate to the NUC over an PCIe connection, the M.2 connector has PCIe in it and the documentation does not clearly shows why only wifi cards would be supported. In the meanwhile I've got the communication going between the NUC and my FPGA platform, the application used to work with a standard mPCIe interface instead of a M.2 E-keyed interface. We found out that there are some differences between the PCIe interfaces described by the standards of the pcisig organisation. There are public documents available from pcisig which are called: "PCI-SIG ENGINEERING CHANGE NOTICE". One of these documents describes some of the differences between mPCIe and M.2 B-keyed. (The B-keyed card also has PCIe present). Some signals has to be pulled low for the REFCLK to become available (CLKREQ#) for instance. On mPCIe this was not required and so we didn't do this. We applied the proper signals to the interface and now it works as a sound card. So my question remains, why would the PCIe interface in the M.2 E-keyed slot not be a standard PCIe interface except for the differences described by the pcisig standards?
